This map will tell you where to not eat in London

by Michal Skýpala

Anyone with smartphone can now find out all about the restaurant before even entering. We live in the world of Yelp, take out apps like Deliveroo or UberEATS and if you are still unconvinced you can read through dozens of listicles from food bloggers.

But how to make sure you won't spend the night on the bathroom floor regretting dining out? That is where the old-fashioned hygiene rating comes in handy and if you look at our map, maybe you might even consider moving.

With the help of numbers scraped by data scientist Mark Dunne we present you the ultimate safety map against a dicky tummy. Dunne analyzed thousands of food hygiene ratings from the Food Standards Agency, that rates pubs, bars and restaurants to supermarkets and nurseries and put together a map a hygiene ranking averages by London postcodes.

If you live in the North we have bad news. Bunch of less-than-ok-hygienic establishments are stretching from Neasden to Ilford. On top of that If you live in E13 you may have better luck with cooking tonight as it was crowned the area with the worst average food hygiene rating from all. If you live in South you are mostly safe, besides couple of dodgy places between Brixton and Peckham.

If you were thinking that food in the capital would is held to a higher standard than elsewhere in the country, the opposite is true. London’s average rating of 4.1 is lower than every other UK city except Leicester.

Mark Dunne Analysis

The good news is that the clear majority of all the 431,758 establishments across the UK had a rating of 5. Also feel free to still go to your favourite greasy fast food. Most of the big chains had great ratings. Surprisingly McDonald's, Burger King, and Subway all had perfect 5 out of 5 ratings even against the bad reputation.

Notable exception of the big fast food chains was KFC, falling quite a bit below the national average. In fact, KFC was sits on the lowest place in comparison with its cheaper mostly copycat fried chicken competitors.
