Where are the fried chicken joints in London?

By Jocylin Fan Chiang

Londoners love their fried chicken shops, it is a thriving business with over 8,000 restaurants in the capital. On any Saturday night, you can spot a line outside of any fried chicken shops near bars and night clubs. The popularity of these joints has attracted data scientists who want to map “the gentrification of fried chicken”

In 2015, Sam Floy came up with the idea using cafes and fried chicken shops in London to explain future housing prices. He collaborated with a couple of data scientists from ASI Data Science presented the various “hot spots” of the capital. The map shows which districts in London have the highest density of fried chicken shops.

The map shows which districts in London has the highest density of fried chicken shops. It appears that Holloway has the highest number, whereas Canary Wharf has the lowest density.

If you live or work around central London such as Westminster, you struggle to find your chicken fix. Interestingly, it appears that Westminster and Hampstead have served more Cafe Latte than Stratford.

On average, there are more fried chicken outlets in deprived areas than in more affluent areas. Public Health of England published a report in March 2017 which shows the correlation between fast food outlets and deprivation scores in UK.

In this diverse capital, fried chicken shops are not only cheap eats but also a part of Londoners’ culture. For the future house hunters, maybe the maps can help you decide if you want to live in a neighbourhood where there are more chicken shops or more coffee shops.
